Photographers
Bill Cottman (Monday) - I have been making photographs since 1969. In high school I wanted to be a commercial artist but my school did not offer guidance in this area so I became an engineer and photography became my tool for self-expression. My creative process builds upon two questions: Why? and How?. The engineer asking how to employ techniques of the medium to yield effective outcomes. The artist asking why am I seeing and feeling this way. My work is a social landscape of diverging, converging and intersecting stories. I make exposures intuitively, memorizing each one and routinely reviewing them through my filter of daily living.
Tracy Reese (Tuesday) - My love of photography grew from my love of travel. I bought my first SLR to capture a trip to Disney World in 2000. Since then my interest, dedication, and arsenal of equipment has grown exponentially. When I find myself in a place I’ve never been, I am instantly inspired to capture the new views and people around me. For me travel and photography go hand in hand - I couldn’t do one without the other.
David Kang (Wednesday) - David Kang has over ten years of experience as an independent film, video and media consultant who has worked in Seoul, New York, and Minneapolis, and is currently working at Asian Media Access and Hana Media & Development in Minneapolis. Throughout his career, David has consistently advocated for increasing the exposure of Asians in media, and he is currently serving on the Northside Arts Leadership Group and the MPLS Arts Commission.
Bryan Thao Worra (Thursday) - Lao American writer Bryan Thao Worra is a resident of North Minneapolis whose photographic work has appeared on the cover of Bamboo Among the Oaks and featured in Quiz and Quill, the Book of Dark Wisdom, Asian American Press and more. An award-winning NEA Fellow in Literature, you can visit him online at http://thaoworra.blogspot.com
Keegan Xavi (Friday) - Keegan Xaví has lived half her life In Los Angeles and half in Minneapolis but considers the Twin Cities her hometown. Life as an artist has led her to collage-making, photography and writing as forms of expression with social commentary and change being the inspiration for most of her work. As Program Manager at Juxtaposition Arts in North Minneapolis, Xaví is able to engage and learn from creative Twin Cities youth via social enterprise programs. “I want to be a resource to motivated youth who may not have much family support as they try to learn about this beautiful crazy world of ours and figure out what role they want to play in the community. Kids are smart, but they still could use a sounding board, connections to resources they may not know about and someone to be proud of them when they get out there and start achieving their goals”. Xaví is currently working on a new body of large-scale collage work.
Dan Olson (Saturday) - Dan Olson has been a Northsider since 1991. He lives in a hundred year old house with his wife and three boys. He began taking pictures with a Miranda G, graduated to a Nikon FE2 and now shoots with a Canon DSLR.
Lynn Riskedal (Sunday) - I’ve lived in North Minneapolis since 2003. Our hobbies include being avid gardners, runners/walkers, and taking care of our golden retriever. I currently serve on the Jordan Area Community Council, striving to make a positive impact on our community. My photograpy focus has been nature and gardening, along with capturing family during our travels. I am looking forward to seeing and photographing North Minneapolis in a different way.
